Travel Tips to Stay Healthy & Harmonized 🌻
Resilient Travel: My Go-To Practices for Body, Mind & Soul
The season of movement and exploration is here (especially for those hoping to catch a break from the Central Texas heat!). As exciting as travel can be, it also takes a toll on the body and mind. From airplane food to disrupted sleep, recycled cabin air, and the emotional intensity of planning, traveling may leave your system feeling off-kilter!
Many of my patients have already headed out on adventures, and I travel to the Dominican Republic for a service trip with my 12-year old on Saturday, so I decided it’s time to send some of my favorite travel support recommendations!
Here are some of my most tried & true practices to help you stay harmonized & resilient while you're on the go. (Much of this pertains to airplane travel, but many of the suggestions will be supportive of road-trip or local travel as well!)
Before You Travel:
Start hydrating early. Begin drinking extra water the day before your trip. Add a pinch of sea salt or trace minerals to help hydrate at a cellular level. Try a green juice the day before and day of your trip. (Stop by JuiceLand in the airport if you’re traveling out of Austin!)
Use No-Jet-Lag (by Miers Laboratory) if flying across time zones. It’s a homeopathic blend that makes adjusting to a different time zone much more easeful. Follow the instructions on the box exactly and you’ll be glad you did!
Pack your travel support kit. A few key remedies can help your digestion, immunity, and nervous system stay steady in new environments so you can fully enjoy your travel plans.
While You Travel:
Avoid alcohol on flights. It’s dehydrating and can make fatigue and inflammation worse, as well as worsen jet lag.
Wear compression socks. These help prevent swelling and keep circulation and lymph moving well, especially on long flights.
Drink water regularly. Aim for at least one glass of water per hour on the plane. Add electrolytes if possible. (Tip: a few hours into a long flight, the flight staff will typically set trays of filled water cups at the back of the plane. Take a walk once per hour and get a cup of water at the same time!)
Ground yourself as soon as possible.
Take your shoes off and stand on earth - grass, dirt, sand - for at least ten minutes as soon as possible after your flight. Grounding, also known as earthing, helps regulate circadian rhythms, lower inflammation, and reduce clotting risk. In fact, a 2013 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that grounding significantly reduced blood viscosity (a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease) after just two hours of contact with the Earth!
Once You Arrive:
Continue grounding daily. A few barefoot minutes outside can calm your system, improve sleep, and reduce travel-related tension.
Let nature’s abundance nourish you. Sunlight, ocean water, and forest air are not just beautiful, they’re also biologically supportive!
Sunlight helps reset sleep cycles and hormone balance.
Ocean or mineral-rich water provides magnesium and calms the body.
Forests, waterfalls, the beach, and open spaces offer negative ions that support immune and mood health.
